[Background]
Alphonse is the second son of Trisha Elric and Van Hohenheim, born in the town of Resembool in 1900. Despite the sudden and mysterious disappearance of his father when he was still a baby, Al's first few years were relatively peaceful and happy. He and his brother, Edward, discovered a talent for alchemy, much to their mother's joy. However, in 1904, when Al was only 4 years old, Trisha fell ill and died shortly after, leaving the two brothers to fend for themselves. The boys became determined to find some way of bringing their beloved mother back with the power of alchemy.
The brothers lived alone in their own home for the next few years, supported by their close friend and neighbor Winry Rockbell and her grandmother Pinako. They spent most of their time researching alchemy and the taboo act of human transmutation. Despite the fact that they were obviously prodigies, they could only go so far teaching themselves. Fortunately, a female alchemist by the name of Izumi Curtis appeared in the town of Resembool, and after some persuasion, agreed to take Ed and Al in as students if they could pass her preliminary test.
The boys gained valuable experience under Izumi. They trained extensively in martial arts and alchemy with her for five months. Despite being taught that death was an inevitable part of the universe, the boys were adamant about bringing their mother back to life. And so, when they returned home, they had gained enough knowledge to attempt the human transmutation.
However, the human transmutation did not go as planned. Ed and Al were pulled into The Gate and met the mysterious being that lived there called Truth. Al was forced into a stream of Truth's vast alchemic knowledge and watched helplessly as his body was stripped from his soul as a toll for passing through God's domain. When his soul returned to the human dimension, it attached itself to the lifeless, soulless thing that their human transmutation had created. However, because it had no viable ability to survive, it died, leaving Al's soul to wander aimlessly without a body again.
When Al next awoke, he discovered himself in a suit of armor that Ed had attached his soul to, using advanced alchemy. Edward had had to sacrifice his right arm and left leg in order to create the blood rune that bound Al to this suit of armor. With all the trauma of that day's events, Al buried everything he'd seen from Truth deep in his mind and forgot it all. He carried his brother’'s bloodied body to his neighbors and begged Pinako to save Edward. That night, he realized the horrible price that he has to pay to remain in his new body: he is unable to sleep or eat, and thus spends his first night – of many – alone and reliving the nightmares of their attempt at human transmutation.
The boys remained in a state of grief after their traumatic ordeal until a visit from a state alchemist by the name of Roy Mustang. Roy persuaded Ed to join the state alchemist program, telling him that they could use the resources that would be available to them to find a way to bring back their bodies. Strengthened once again by this possibility, Edward requested Pinako and Winry to fashion him an artificial arm and leg made of automail. A year later, he applied for and received his state certification. Because of Al's state, he was unable to take the physical exam and could not join his brother as a state alchemist. On October 3rd of 1911, the boys burnt down their home in Resembool and set off on a journey to return their bodies.
After a series of adventures and saving towns from the corrupt people who govern them, the boys arrive in Central where Roy Mustang introduce them to a state alchemist by the name of Shou Tucker. They hope to use Shou's knowledge on creating chimeras to further their goal of returning to normal. However, they quickly learn that Shou's successful "talking chimera" was actually resulted from experimenting with the life of his ex-wife and that his latest creation was a fusion created with his daughter Nina, which both boys had become quite attached to.
During this time, Ed and Al also learn that the mutilated Nina and her father had been murdered by a mysterious State alchemist-targeting serial murderer by the name of Scar. Soon thereafter, Scar comes after Ed and displays to the boys his ability to destroy anything with the touch of his right hand. Unable to defeat Scar, Al – whose body had been severely damaged by Scar's power – watched helplessly as Ed loses the will to fight and exchanges his own life to Scar for the promise that Al's would be spared. Thankfully, other state alchemists heard the commotion and rushed to the rescue of the Elrics' before Scar could kill Edward. After the danger had passed, Al berated his brother for giving up hope, stressing the importance of staying alive and together.
On their way back to Resembool to have Edward's automail fixed by Winry, the boys and Major Armstrong are taken on a slight detour when they run into Dr. Tim Marcoh, a medical alchemist who had worked extensively on the creation of a philosopher's stone during the time of the Ishvalan War. Dr. Marcoh reveals to the Elric brothers that the creation of a philosopher's stone is possible, but refuses to relinquish details, calling it the devil's work. At the last minute, as the Elrics are waiting for their train, Dr. Marcoh shows up and hands Ed a note, stating that his research materials can be found at the Central Library.
The boys arrive at Resembool to have Winry and Pinako reattach Edward's automail arm. After patching up Al's suit of armor and a short recovery time, the boys once again head back to Central.Little do they know that the library had already been burnt down, Dr. Marcoh's notes along with it.
------CANNON UPDATE------
The boys get to Central only to find that the 1st Branch library had been burnt down. Central seems to be in a panic, and the military has been given strict orders to capture Scar as soon as possible. At first, all seemed to be lost, but Edward and Alphonse soon meet Sheska, who has an incredible gift of being able to remember every book she has read; five days later, Sheska has reproduced all of the notes by Dr. Marcoh, which turns out to be coded as a cooking recipe.
A week of studying Dr. Marcoh's notes, and the Elric brothers discover that the Philosopher's stone they've been seeking requires the sacrifice of live humans. Just when they think that they will never be able to reach their goals, they discover the mysterious Laboratory 5. They go investigate Laboratory 5, despite promising Armstrong they wouldn't, and meet Barry the Chopper ("Number 48") and Slicer ("Number 66"), criminals who had been experimented on at the laboratory.
Alphonse fights with Barry, only to find that he is a soul-bound armor as well. Barry manages to trick Al into thinking that he's not really Edward's brother and causes him to doubt his existence. Thankfully, 2nd Lieutenant Maria Ross and Sargeant Denny Brosh show up at this time and Barry escapes as the laboratory blows up. Envy appears before Al to hand over an unconscious Ed.
Upset, Al avoids Edward in the hospital and sulks, while contemplating Barry's words. It's Ed's comment about how lucky Al is to not have to drink milk due to his armored body that makes Al snap, and he yells at his brother that he didn't want this body in the first place. He rages, convinced that his soul is a fake and that Ed, Winry, and Pinako had just been tricking him the entire time. But Winry smacks him and tells him of how Ed blames himself for Al's body and feels that Al is blaming him as well. They make up, and Edward fills Al, Armstrong, and Hughes in on meeting Lust and Envy in the laboratory. However, none of them know yet who (or what) Lust and Envy are.
The boys ignore Fuhrer Bradley's warning to stop poking their noses in business that doesn't concern them by heading to Dublith to visit their teacher, Izumi. They make a stop at Rush Valley with Winry on the way. There, Winry helps deliver a baby and resolves to stay and train to become a better mechanic for Ed.
The boys meet up with Izumi in Dublith and question her on the Philosopher's stone, which she doesn't know anything about. After seeing the way Edward can perform alchemy without a transmutation circle, Izumi confronts the Elrics and they tell her of their past. Izumi scolds them and tells them that they are no longer her apprentices. As they're about to leave, Sig tells them about how Izumi has attempted human transmutation in the past and makes them realize that they are able to speak to Izumi as equals now that they are no longer her students.
The boys beg Izumi for clues to get their bodies back, and they finally conclude that Al saw "The Truth" as well when they attempted human transmutation, but that he had been so traumatized, he doesn't remember. They resolve to find a way to get back his memory.
While Edward is away taking his yearly state assessment, Al is lured to an abandoned factory where he meets chimeras and is kidnapped by them. He meets Greed, who asks for the secret of his body. Greed shows Al that, as a homunculus, he can't die easily. This is the first time that Al has discovered that homunculus really exist.
Izumi rushes into the factory to save Al and takes down everyone except Greed, who tries to bargain teaching the boys how to make a homunculus for the secret of Al's body. Meanwhile, Edward returns to Dublith with Bradley and Armstrong and discovers that Al is missing.
During Ed's fight against Greed, a few of his henchmen carry Al away. Bradley, Armstrong, and a troop storms in shortly after, killing everyone they encounter. Al struggles with is captor, Martel, to escape but ends up witnessing Greed's death by Bradley's hands. After killing Greed and his henchmen, Bradley approaches Al and kills Martel, who is still hiding within Al's armor; her blood splashes on his blood seal and he suddenly regains his memories from being inside the Gates of Truth. When he regains conscience, Al and Ed discuss Al's regained memories, the homunculi, and the Philosopher's Stone.
The Elrics return to Rush Valley to visit Winry and get Edward's automail repaired. There, they meet Ling, who is looking for information on the Philosopher' Stone, and get into a fight with his two guards. Al discovers that he can transmute without a circle, now that he has regained his memories.
Ed, Al, Winry, Ling, and his guards leave on a train headed for Central. But Ling is already gone by the time they arrive. The brothers find out that Hughes has died and believe that Mustang has killed Ross, thinking that she was the one who killed Hughes. They blame themselves for the death of Hughes and confess everything to Mrs. Hughes about how her husband became involved. They ask for forgiveness and tell her that they don't want to continue their quest for their bodies if it will harm others, but Mrs. Hughes urges them to continue nonetheless.
Edward is dragged away mysteriously by Armstrong, and Al learns from Ling that Ross is still alive and that Mustang had plotted everything. Alphonse meets up with Mustang, Hawkeye, and Havoc on their chase after Barry and the team arrive at the 3rd Laboratory. They split up to find Barry, who had excitedly rushed in after his real body.
Al and Hawkeye find Barry and his chopped up body and Al learns that Barry's rotten body had become unstable after being attached to another soul; Alphonse wonders what that means for his own armored body. Lust appears and slashes Barry into pieces, before going after Hawkeye and making her believe that Mustang is dead. Alphonse steps between Hawkeye and Lust just as Mustang shows up and burns Lust over and over until she finally dies.
[Personality]
Al has a close bond with his brother Edward, especially due to the fact that they were abandoned by their father and then suffered the loss of their mother as well shortly after. They have taken care of each other and relied on each other all their life. Despite them forming multiple bonds and making new friends, the two boys are always reluctant of letting others into their sphere. They are set on returning to their original bodies, but are also determined not to involve others, lest someone else become hurt. The brothers are especially protective of their childhood friend Winry and often become cryptic and lie to her so they do not have to involve her in the horrors that they've had to witness.
Alphonse is a stark contrast of his brother; while Edward is hot headed, Alphonse is kind, considerate, and patient, sometimes to a fault. He often selflessly puts himself in harm's way to save others, in particular his family and friends (new and old) but also sometimes enemies as well. Despite having retained a very pure, childlike personality, Alphonse can be very mature, especially when compared to his quick-tempered brother. More possibly, it is due to his brother's quick temper that Alphonse is mature and level-headed. He is no less passionate, but Ed usually beats him as first to be angered, giving Al the job of smoothing out the situation and calming his brother down.
Alphonse is incredibly insecure about his large, artificial body, especially when it keeps him from doing normal things or draws extra attention to him. He also secretly feels responsible for his mother's failed human transmutation and the loss of Edward's arm and leg.
He silently craves human contact. Perhaps because of this, he has a special affection toward small cats and has a tendency of picking up stray cats and hiding them in his armor away from his disapproving brother. Because he cannot eat or sleep in his armor, the second greatest thing that Alphonse craves is the ability to taste real food. He keeps a small journal of foods he would like to taste once his body is returned to him.
------CANNON UPDATE------
After regaining his memories of The Truth, Alphonse can now perform alchemy without a transmutation circle. He is also more aware of the evils of the world, and because of that, he has become even more set on protecting others.
He has also developed a slight paranoia that his armored body will eventually reject his soul. This has propelled him to become even more eager to find a way back to his original body, but never at the risk of harming someone else.
[Specialties/Abilities]
Alphonse has the ability to perform alchemy. His manipulations are generally quick, clean, functional, and pays great attention to detail. However, since his memories of The Gate were suppressed, he cannot perform alchemy simply by clapping his hands together. He does not require direct physical contact with the transmutation arrays (and can now perform transmutations without a circle) and can manipulate matter by standing over the circle and applying concentration.
He is also quite skilled at martial arts. The fact that he is in a suit of armor gives him a boost in speed, strength, and defense.
[Affection] It's pretty hard to do much to a suit of armor, but Alphonse welcomes you to try anyways. Anything but getting into his armor... 8| (Not that you'd know there's nothing inside...)
[Fighting] He wouldn't invoke fights, but you're welcomed to start one with him.
[Other Permissions] 4th walling is okay, but don't go overboard with it please. Ask before climbing into Al's suit or attempting to open it :3 If your character has special 'sensing' abilities, it's fine for them to note that there's something not altogether there about Al! Basically, have at it~ If it's more srs business stuff, poke at me first and talk to me before doing it.
[Other Facts] He'll be entering the city in his suit of armor! :) This, of course, means that he won't actually be able to sleep. Which means he can't dream... However, later in the canon, Alphonse's suit of armor will begin to reject his soul, making him have blackouts during which he can see his own body. I was hoping to use this and say that Somarium has a specific effect on Alphonse. When he experiences these blackouts (which will be uncontrolled and at random), it'll still be because his original body is calling out to him. However, because he is in Somarium, which is a dream world, instead of seeing his body, Alphonse will essentially be put into a 'dream' every time his original body attempts to pull him back. The blackouts will eventually get longer and more frequent. Probably more troublesome as well.
